Connect Four: Attack and Defend

GameHub • Updated 1 October 2026

Connect Four is about more than making a visible line. Gravity determines where each disc lands, and the other player may use the same column to create a threat.

Check immediate wins first

Before choosing a column, look for a place where your next disc makes four. Then check whether the opponent can win on their next move. An urgent block often matters more than building a new two-disc line.

Use the centre

Central columns take part in more possible horizontal and diagonal lines. They can offer flexibility, but a centre move is not automatically the best response to a concrete threat.

Respect gravity

An empty square above another empty square is not available immediately. A diagonal plan may need supporting discs below it, and those supporting moves can benefit your opponent.

Create two threats

A position with two different winning moves can be hard to defend because the opponent can block only one column. Look for this possibility while ensuring neither setup move gives away an immediate win.

The computer in this version

GameHub’s opponent looks for an immediate win or a direct block, then selects an available column. It does not search every future variation. Practise tactics here and avoid treating a victory as a competitive ranking.
